Cambrian & Clydach 2 - 0 Cwmaman Institute
NATHANIEL CAR SALES LEAGUE CUP ROUND ONE
Saturday 10 September 2011 2.00 PM KO
Cambrian made several changes for this cup tie resting senior players for next week's Bryntirion fixture; including Lee Matthews, Mike Jones and Ceri Morgan. Manager Jarred Harvey was happy to see the return of Steven Turner and Scott Hayward to take up their defensive duties.
Cwmaman made a positive start to the match, Leighton Price firing just wide after running into space. Tom Welbeoff attempted to open his scoring account at Cambrian after smashing a shot from distance but keeper Ryan Griffiths was equal to it. The visitors kept the Cambrian backs busy with good crosses into the box.
Jamie Rewbury after winning back possession put a long ball down field to Jason Bertorelli, defender Lee Williams was forced to concede a corner, the cross found the head of Dane Williams but deflected onto the post. Cwmaman were putting the bodies on the line and were determined not to go a goal down. Cwmaman nearly took advantage of a corner of their own, the cross which was whipped in was headed a fraction wide of the post. James Mahoney who made his first start of the season often causes defenders grief with his pace, he was brought down just outside the box to stop his run through on goal and Liam Hutchinson stepped up to take the free kick, somehow no one connected with the ball into the penalty area which fell just wide of the post. More pressure from Cambrian came when Dane Williams controlled a cross just yards from the goal line, Griffiths closed down Williams shot quickly to prevent a goal.
It appeared Cambrian would not score as more chances came and went, Dane Williams back heel allowed Ian Thomas a shot on the edge of the box but the bar saved Cwmaman, James Mahoney also rattled the frame of the goal but the referee had blown up for a free kick. Liam Hutchinson took the free kick which keeper Griffiths could only push out just past Williams who was waiting to seize upon.
The second half started with a goal, Cambrian's James Mahoney played the ball just in front of the goalie which was met by Jason Bertorelli Griffiths had his angles right and blocked the shot but it fell to Ian Thomas who placed the ball into the bottom corner from just a few yards out.
Cwmaman were awarded a penalty after Jamie Rewbury's slide tackle did not impress the referee, but the linesperson had signalled offside nearly a minute previously, the penalty did not stand but the yellow card for Rewbury did.
Cwmaman came close to scoring after their striker got the smallest of touches on a dangerous ball into the box, his touch beat Howells but Cambrian had bodies on the line to clear.
The referee was at the centre of the action once more after Steven Turner's lunging tackle, Turner saw a second yellow for the challenge and Cwmaman a straight red for retaliation.
Dane Williams had another chance to score after Jason Bertorelli ran the ball past the defence and passed to him 10 yards out but Williams hit over the bar. Substitute Ceri Morgan crossed in to Dane Williams at the back post who could only pass back to the goalie. Williams had one more chance, one on one with Griffiths but his effort to chip over the goalie failed and the rebound flew over the bar. The game ended with one last goal from Cambrians Bertorelli , after running through and past the Cwmaman defence his shot found the bottom corner making it 2-0 to the home side who will advance onto round two.
